Vance, Cyrus Roberts Vance, Cyrus Roberts, 1917â€"2002, U.S. secretary of state (1977â€"80), b. Clarksburg, W.Va., grad. Yale (B.A., 1939, LL.B., 1942). After seeing action in the Navy during World War II, Vance practiced law, becoming a respected international lawyer. He entered government service as a Senate commiittee counsel in 1957. and later served in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations as secretary of the army (1961â€"62), deputy secretary of defense (1964â€"67), and U.S. negotiator to the Paris Peace Conference on the Vietnam War (1968â€"69). He also served as special envoy to Cyprus (1967) and Korea (1968). As President Carter 's secretary of state, Vance opposed the 1980 attempt to rescue the American hostages in Iran and resigned after the mission failed. He subsequently served on several diplomatic missions, in particular as head of United Nations' efforts to negotiate an end to the violence following the dissolution of Yugoslavia (1991â€"92). At various times Vance also served on the b oards of corporations, universities, foundations, and other organizations, and was chairman (1988â€"1990) of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The Relationship Between Student Motivation and GPA

Motivation is important because it allows you to work towards and complete your goals. GPA allows you to see, on average, how well a student has performed in all classes they have taken. It is likely there is a relationship between motivation and GPA. If a student is highly motivated, will their GPA rise? Based upon previous research, it is hypothesized that students who are highly motivated will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Seventeen university students, 9 male and 8 female participated in the survey. The survey included 9 questions that measured motivation, measured on a Likert scale from 1-5. [Results]. For students, this reward would be good grades and a high GPA. Non-traditional students had higher levels of intrinsic motivation, meaning they enjoyed what they where doing and were not just motivated by grades and GPA. Non-traditional students are ones that are financially independent and possibly working a full time job. (Author Name) concluded that the students interest in their major lead to the highest levels of motivation. Although this study focused heavily on motivation, it did not focus on actual GPA scores. (Author Name) did a study on motivation for studying engineering, and measured GPA as a dependent variable. Students who showed interest in their academics had lots of success in their subject, which led to higher GPA’s. (The author) also found that students who took math and physics courses with positive attitudes were more likely to be successful. A student having a positive outlook and showing interest in a subject is likely to be very motivated. This study is relevant because it looks at both students motivation and the resulting GPA. Similar to the study by (Author 2), a study by (Author 3) looked at time use and academic outcomes. Good use of time can be related to motivation, while academic outcomes can be seen as a students GPA. What one would consider completely normal in one culture would be considered abnormal in another, for example the island of Java often set fire to a ball soaked in petrol and then play football with it. Here that would be considered wrong and abnormal but is an everyday occurrence for the people of Java. Cultural differences are also a problem for the Failure to Function Adequately definition of abnormality. This classification of abnormality involves a person who conforms to their 7 characteristics of the abnormal as having ill mental health. Examples of these characteristics are vividness, unconventionality and observer discomfort. These three primary forms can be subdivided further to add detail and specificity, such as whether the action is ongoing or to describe the order in which events occurred. For example, the present simple verb tense concerns actions that happen every day, while the past simple verb tense refers to something that happens in the past. In all, there are 13 tenses.
